Abhishek Borkar is a sarod player of the Maihar Senia gharana. Born into a musically rich environment in Pune, he began training in vocal music and tabla at the age of four before settling on the sarod under his father and guru, Pt. Shekhar Borkar. The melody in his playing shows the influence of his idols Ustad Allauddin Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, as well as his father, while his intricate layakari reflects the guidance of Pt. Shashi Bellare. His festival appearances include the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Kundgol (2016), the Simhastha Mahakumbh Kala Utsav, Ujjain (2016), Bhilwara Sur Sangam, New Delhi (2018) and the Gaansaraswati Mahotsav (2019). Also adept at the guitar, and with a knowledge of western music and instrumentation, Abhishek teaches and mentors a number of students. He aims to take his father's work, the creation of the 'Tarankaar Baaz' and the 'Sur-tarang', to the world. In his words, "the limitations of the sarod can be surpassed because music comes from the heart, and the heart never ceases to sing".
