Bhendibazaar Gharana

Founded by the sons of Ustad Dilawar Hussain Khan in Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar around 1870, this gharana developed a unique gayaki. It is characterised by open‑throated 'akar' singing, long breath control and intricate note combinations. Musicians use sargam patterns and the khandmer principle to unveil ragas in an inventive way, creating a lyrical style that influenced later vocalists.
