Patiala Gharana

The Patiala gharana, forged at the Patiala court, pairs lyric warmth with athletic virtuosity: brisk vakra/firāt taans (often bol-taan/sargam), playful layakari, chest-anchored projection, and supple meend–gamak. Eclectic yet distinctly Punjabi (with tappa accents), it sustains a strong thumri/ghazal stream alongside khayāl. Founded by “Alia-Fattu” (Ustads Ali Baksh Jarnail and Fateh Ali), its modern icon is Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
