Paul Livingstone is a sitarist and one of the few American disciples of Pt. Ravi Shankar; he also learned from Pt. Rajeev Taranath and Amiya Dasgupta. A dedicated sitarist since his first sojourn in India in 1985, he performs regularly as a classical sitar soloist and has appeared in the US, Mexico, Europe and South Asia, including India, Nepal and Pakistan, with leading tabla artists such as Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri. He also plays the upright bass, on which he explores the meditative inspiration of dhrupad. He held a six-month music fellowship in India for dhrupad studies with the American Institute of Indian Studies, and is currently learning from Ustad Mohi Bahauddin Dagar, a 20th-generation veena artist of his lineage, while conducting interviews with Dagar-bani dhrupad artists of all ages in India. As a composer of 'ragajazz chamber music', Paul leads his own Arohi Ensemble. He has composed and recorded for film and television and for live theatre and dance productions, has been featured on two Grammy Award-winning records, and has performed and recorded with artists such as Alanis Morrisette, Ozomatli, Ricky Kej and Emmanuel, as well as traditional and jazz crossover artists from many countries. He is on the music faculty at Glendale Community College and is the creator of the Soul Force Project, an evolving multimedia performance on the history and relevance of nonviolent revolution and localised social action.
