Sarathi Chatterjee was a Hindustani classical vocalist whose music blended the Benaras gharana into the Kirana gharana gayaki of his early training. Born into a musical family, he received his initial training from his father, Prof. Arun Kumar Chatterjee, a representative of the Kirana gharana, and his mother, Smt. Shefali Chatterjee, and continued his sadhana under Pt. Rajan-Sajan Mishra of the Benaras gharana. Besides khayal, he performed thumri and bhajan. He passed away at a relatively young age on 29 December 2020. An 'A' grade artist of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan and an 'Outstanding' category musician on the ICCR panel, he was awarded a junior fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, in 1998 for research on 'Different Styles of Thumri'. He presented the AIR National Programme of Music in 1998 and 2011, the National Programme of Music on Doordarshan in 2004, and the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan in 2008. He performed regularly at major festivals, including the ITC Sangeet Sammelan in Calcutta and the Saptak festival in Ahmadabad. Sarathi held a bachelor's degree in Rubber and Plastic Technology from Calcutta University. He collaborated on research with the Department of Psychology, University of Calcutta, on the psychological impact of music, and was co-investigator on a forensic psychology research project under the Government of India. In 2006 he formed Sangeetam, a registered society in Gurugram, to impart professional training to students, honour great masters, and hold seminars, events and festivals of music and dance.
