Zarin Daruwala Sharma (nee Daruwala) was a sarod player, born on October 9, 1946, and a musical prodigy from the age of four. Her gurus were Pt. Haripada Ghosh, Pt. Bhishmadev Vedi, Pt. Laxmanprasad Jaipurwale, Pt. V.G. Jog, Dr. S.C.R. Bhat and Padma Bhushan Dr. S.N. Ratanjankar. She had a distinctive individual style, and her forte was rendering uncommon ragas in uncommon talas with difficult layakari and tayyari. In 1960, aged 13, she won the All India Radio (AIR) music competition at New Delhi. At 14 she played for the title music of a Hindi film, and some years later began a longer association with film music, the first female classical musician to do so. Her honours include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1988), the "Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar" from the Maharashtra government (1990) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy award for 2007. She performed at major venues across India and for dignitaries, consuls and ambassadors, and was chosen to perform before the Queen of England during her visit to India in 1961. Her disciples include santoor player Ulhas Bapat. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 68.
