Dr. Arun Dravid, born on 3 October 1943, is a senior exponent of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. He is a gold medallist from IIT Bombay and holds a PhD from MIT, USA. He began his training under Abdul Majid Khan, a disciple of Alladiya Khan and the lifelong sarangi accompanist of Kesarbai Kerkar, who built a solid foundation of the gharana's gayaki in him. He trained with him from 1955 to 1960 before taking a break from music for academic reasons. When he returned to music a year later, he approached Mogubai Kurdikar, who directed him to her daughter, Kishori Amonkar. He thus became the first formal disciple of Kishoritai and had a long association with her, while also receiving guidance from Mogubai Kurdikar from time to time. His music balances the bhaava-dominant nature of his guru's music with the structural beauty characteristic of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, and the shuddha aakar and taans typical of the gharana can be heard in his singing. He is perhaps the only male musician of his generation who has preserved and sings the gayaki of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana in its pure form. Besides raag-sangeet, he also sings light classical genres such as thumri and Natya Sangeet. He is engaged in passing on the gharana's gayaki to the next generation, and his disciples include Devaki Pandit, Gauri Pathare and Jui Dhaygude.
