Debojyoti Gupta is a sitarist of the Imdadkhani gharana, known for his melodic presentation, intricate sense of rhythm, clean technique and clarity of taans. Born into a family of music lovers and practitioners, he was introduced to vocal music at the age of four by his first guru, his mother Smt. Leena Gupta, and was simultaneously initiated into tabla, which gave him a firm foundation in swara and laya. He received his initial sitar training from Pt. Ramakant Singh, a disciple of Ustad Ilyas Khan of Lucknow. In 1990 the sarod player Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta heard him in concert and decided to take him as a disciple, and Debojyoti received talim from him for eight years. In 2000 he was accepted as a disciple by the sitarist Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan of the Etawah and Imdadkhani gharana, under whom he continues to train. A graded artiste of All India Radio (AIR), Debojyoti won AIR's national music competition and received the national scholarship in music from the Government of India three times. He is also a teacher, with students from all over the world.
