Pt. D. V. Kanebua, born in 1920, trained as an Indian classical vocalist in the Gwalior and Agra gharanas. He received his primary training from Pt. Neelkanthbua Jangam, a disciple of Pt. Balkrishnabua Ichalkaranjikar, and was then trained under Pt. Vinayakbua Patwardhan and Pt. Mirashibua of the Gwalior gharana. Later he became a gandabandh shagird of Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan of the Agra gharana. Kanebua was also influenced by the Jaipur and Kirana gharanas, which helped him develop his own distinctive style, blending features of all these gharanas besides Agra-Gwalior. He devoted his time to teaching the next generation on the gurukul pattern and carried forward the legacy of Pt. Balkrishnabua Ichalkaranjikar. Through his efforts, many classical singers emerged, among them the late Pt. Narendra Kanekar, Balasaheb Tikekar, Sharad Jambhekar, Mangala Joshi, Hrishikesh Bodas and Manjusha Patil. Kanebua was honoured with the title 'Sangeetacharya' by Gandharva Mahavidyalay, Miraj.
