Dr. Jyoti Iyer is a Hindustani vocalist of the Gwalior gharana. She learnt vocal music initially from her mother, Smt. Sarojini Phagre, and then became a ganda-bandh shishya of Pt. Sajjanlal Bhatt, a guru and performer and a senior disciple of the late Pt. Balasaheb Poonchwale of Gwalior. She also trained for a long time with Ganasaraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar, and at present receives further guidance from Pt. Raghunandan Panshikar, a senior disciple of Smt. Kishori Amonkar. In addition, she received training in light classical music from the late Pt. Raghunath Seth, flautist and music director. Jyoti has a rich, mellifluous voice with easy reach across all three saptaks, which lends her disciplined exposition of a raga both aesthetic and emotive content. She has broadened her musical knowledge through research on 'The origin of Tappa', for which she obtained a doctorate from Bhopal University, Bhopal.
