GHARANA
Kirana
GURU
Pt. Sangameshwar
Pt. Kaivalya Kumar Gurav is a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Kirana gharana. His grandfather, Pt. Ganapatrao Gurav, was among the first batch of disciples of Abdul Karim Khan, the founder of the Kirana gharana. His father and guru, Pt. Sangameshwar, trained under Pt. Ganapatrao Gurav and is known for singing in the true Kirana tradition. Gifted with a naturally high-pitched, mellifluous voice, Kaivalya Kumar renders ragas with natural phirat, murki, rigorous tans, sure rhythm and an imaginative, aesthetic approach. He became the youngest Hindustani classical vocalist to receive a top grade from All India Radio and Doordarshan, at the age of 35, and acted and sang as Tansen in 'Swarasaadhana', a Doordarshan serial. Music companies including H.M.V. of Mumbai, Alurkar Audio Products of Pune, Legendary Legacy of Mumbai and Ashwini Audio Products of Bangalore have released several cassettes and CDs of his classical and light classical music. He has been featured in many prestigious sangeet sammelans in India and abroad.
