Kamal Tambe was one of the most respected vocalists of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, a performer and teacher who passed away early after a prolonged illness. Kamaltai received her taleem from Mogubai Kurdikar and was one of her senior-most disciples, also accompanying her guru in several concerts. Her music was rooted in Mogubai's idiom, to which she added her own interpretations. Her gayaki was said to be disciplined and vigorous, with particular emphasis on raga form and strictness in its execution. Her recitals included the khaas ragas of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana and were warmly reviewed. She was also a composer: her tarana in raga Savani Nat is a popular drut cheez in that raga. A passionate teacher, she trained many disciples, including Pratima Tilak, Sukhada Kane and Shaunak Abhisheki. Her life was wholly dedicated to music and the gharana, and after her death a memorial fund was set up in her name that awards scholarships to deserving students dedicated to music.
