Krishna Gundopant Ginde was a Hindustani classical singer, teacher, composer and scholar, born on December 26, 1925, in Bailhongal, near Belgaum, Karnataka. At the age of 11 he became a shishya of S. N. Ratanjankar, then Principal of the Marris College of Music founded by Bhatkhande, and moved to Lucknow to live in his guru's household. Starting as a beginner in a class supervised by S. C. R. Bhat, Ginde was allowed to sit in on almost any lesson and soon counted among the more advanced students. By 16 he had finished high school and gradually became a personal aide to Ratanjankar, who came to regard him as a musical equal. With his guru's blessing he performed solo on the radio and at prominent festivals, and sang dhrupad in jugalbandi with S. C. R. Bhat. In 1951 he moved to Mumbai to teach at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and in 1962 became principal of Vallabh Sangeet Vidyalaya. Devoting himself to teaching and scholarship, he performed only sporadically; his reputation grew through authoritative explanations and delicate demonstrations of the tonal conventions of various ragas, and he could recall over 2000 compositions from memory. In the late 1980s he received two honorary degrees, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, and became a visiting guru at ITC SRA, lecturing on ragadari sangeet and training select students. On July 13, 1994, he suffered a massive heart attack just after a lecture-demonstration, in the company of fellow musicians.
