Manjiri Alegaonkar is a vocalist and the daughter of the classical vocalist Shri Mohanrao Karve, through whom she was exposed to pure classical music from early childhood. Gifted with a naturally sweet and resonant voice, she began music lessons alongside learning the alphabet, and her early grounding was in the Gwalior-cum-Waze Buwa tradition, as her father is a disciple of the late Waze Buwa. She received systematic training in Jaipur-Atroli gayaki from the late Wamanraoji Deshpande, a well-known musicologist, and was also trained by Pt. Babanrao Haldankar of the Agra gayaki. She currently receives training in Jaipur gayaki from Pt. M.S. Kanetkar. Her gayaki blends a traditional approach to the purity of these gharanas with an appreciation of more romantic genres. She is also an exponent of light music, stage music and gazal, in which she was trained by experts in each field. She is a top-grade artiste of Akashwani and Doordarshan. In addition to scholarships, she has been selected for the ICCR reference panel of artistes for Hindustani classical music, and she received the Kumar Gandharva Award at the hands of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi.
