Pt. Nivruttibua Sarnaik was one of the most popular Hindustani vocalists of his time, with a gayaki that blended the Kirana and Jaipur-Atrauli gharanas. He was born in Kolhapur on 4 July 1912 to Tukarambua Sarnaik, a well-known bhajan singer. At the age of five he was taken by his uncle, Shankarrao Sarnaik, into the Shivraj Natak Mandali, a drama company founded by Govindrao Tembe and others (later the Yashwant Natak Mandali), where he played many roles. Shankarrao, a disciple of Sawai Gandharva, was effectively his first guru, but his formal training began under Govindbua Bhave. He then became a disciple of Sawai Gandharva and learned the Jaipur-Atrauli gayaki from Ustad Alladiya Khan and from Ustad Rajab Ali Khan. He was also deeply influenced by Ustad Amir Khan. An accomplished tabla player, he learned from Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa and Ustad Natthu Khan, among others, giving him an exceptional understanding of taal, rhythm and taan. Between 1969 and 1979 he was an Honorary Guru in the Music Department of Mumbai University, and he was a senior guru at the ITC-sponsored Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta for 12 years, teaching mainly Jaipur gharana gayaki. He had great knowledge of 'anvat' ragas. His disciples included Smt. Vijaya Jadhav Gatlewar, Pt. Dinkar Panshikar and Pt. Prabhudev Sardar, and artistes such as Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, Smt. Kishori Amonkar and Smt. Prabha Atre took guidance from him. He developed Parkinson's disease in 1991 and passed away on 16 February 1994, at the age of 81.
