Pt. Omkarnath Thakur (1897-1967) was a khayal vocalist and a disciple of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, regarded as a doyen of vocalists in the mid-twentieth century. Known for his voice and the special emotional appeal of his khayal singing, he had the gift of bringing out the "bhava" and "rasa" of a raga, and his taans were likened to brilliant flashes of lightning. Before partition he was Principal of the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Lahore, and he subsequently held the Chair of the Music Faculty of Benaras Hindu University. A musicologist, he was the author of two treatises on music, "Sangitanjali" and "Pranava Bharati". His disciples were not many; the most distinguished include violinist Dr. N Rajam and vocalist P.N. Barwe.
