Rajendra Vaishampayan is a samvadini player who also plays the tabla. He began learning tabla at the age of five, studying under Shri Appasaheb Bedekar, Shri Prasad Velankar, Shri Suhas Pai and Pt. Pandharinath Nageshkar. While working as a staff artiste at the Alla Rakha Institute of Music, Mumbai, he learned much by observing the late Ustad Alla Rakha Khan Saheb, and he studied the intricacies of laya and taal for some time under Taalyogi Pt. Suresh Talkwalkar. In his early years he played tabla in live orchestras, and he has accompanied artistes such as Smt. Veena Sahasrabuddhe on tabla. While pursuing his software engineering degree he met Pt. Manohar Chimote, a master of the samvadini (a modified harmonium made suitable for solo performance), and this meeting was a turning point in his life. He continues to learn the instrument under Pt. Chimote, whom he has also accompanied in concerts. He has given solo samvadini performances in India and the USA and has accompanied artists including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Pt. Jasraj, Rajan Sajan Mishra, Smt. Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande and Smt. Laxmi Shankar. He has also lent his voice to albums, advertisements and jingles, and recorded the entire 'Daasbodh' and 'Gurucharitra' in audio format.
