Rama Rao Naik (1909-1998) was regarded as the most authentic proponent of the Agra gharana from South India, having learned from Swami Vallabhdas, Ata Hussain Khan and Faiyaz Khan. A musician and teacher, he was one of the primary musicians responsible for popularising Hindustani music in Bangalore, a Carnatic bastion. He groomed several disciples in the true tradition of his gayaki, and it was said that Bombay and Bangalore were the two places where the Agra-Atrauli gharana flourished. His best-known disciples include M.R. Gautam, Lalita Ubhayakar, Meera Savoor and Lalith J. Rao, among several others.
