Vid. Shalmalee Joshi is a Hindustani classical vocalist. Born on 14 July 1972 in Sangli, Maharashtra, she began learning Hindustani classical music at the age of three with her mother, Smt. Madhuri Kulkarni, continuing for around eight years. Sangli has a rich association with Hindustani music: stalwarts such as the late Pt. Dinanath Mangeshkar, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and Pt. Vishnudas Bhave spent many years there, and it is the karmabhumi of the music teacher Pt. C. T. Mhaiskar (Chintubua). In Mumbai she became a disciple of Smt. Padma Talwalkar, accompanying her at concerts across India during two and a half years of training and learning the finer points of the Jaipur-Atrauli, Kirana and Gwalior gayakis. She also took part in an experiment with Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, singing lehra in vocal ('nagma') for his tabla solo performances, which improved her understanding of tala and laya. Deciding to concentrate on the Jaipur-Atrauli gayaki, she went on to learn from Pt. Ratnakar Pai, a senior exponent of the Jaipur gharana and a music teacher. Her honours include the Surshri Kesarbai Kerkar Scholarship instituted by the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai; a scholarship from the Acharya Ratanjankar Foundation, Mumbai; the Pt. K. G. Ginde Award; a scholarship from Sajan Milap, Mumbai; and a merit scholarship from the Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, Mumbai. In December 1998 she performed at the Sawai Gandharva Festival, Pune.
