Pt. Amarnath
Vid. Shanti Sharma was a Hindustani classical vocalist and one of the prominent disciples of the late Pt. Amarnath, himself a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan. She was rated highly among the singers of her time. Born to an Army father in a family originally from Tanjore district, she grew up without strong musical ties, with the emphasis on education; her siblings are all established in academics. She won the National Science Talent competition and completed a master's degree in chemistry at BITS Pillani, after which her mother took the initiative to take her to music. She was inducted into music at the age of 12, and her first guru was Guru Sangameshwar of Hyderabad. In 1978, after completing her education, she focused fully on singing despite obstacles from her family. Pt. Amarnath supported her; when he took up a job at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi, he selected her as his first student, and she later assisted him. Asked about regrets, she said, "I am happy I have stuck to music and not given in to the temptation of earning quick bucks by becoming a science teacher. Music, for me, is a vocation. God's gift, which I humbly accept and nurture." She was married to Dinesh Sharma; they had a daughter, who died young, and a son. She died on 23 April 2008, at the age of 52, under mysterious circumstances.
