Pt. Sharad Sathe, born on 18 February 1932, was a Hindustani classical vocalist and a follower of the Gwalior gayaki. In 1949 he began formal training with Pt. D.V. Paluskar, son of Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. After Pt. D.V. Paluskar's death in October 1955, he moved to Mumbai in 1956 and studied for nearly a decade with the musicologist Prof. B.R. Deodhar; with a Government of India scholarship, he earned the Sangeet Visharad of the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal with honours in 1961. From 1966 he was a disciple of Pt. Sharadchandra Arolkar of the Gwalior school, who handed down to him rare compositions in khayals, tappas and taranas. A Top Grade artiste on All India Radio (AIR) and television, he performed across India and toured Nepal, Dubai, Bahrein, the USA and the UK. In 1972 he sang for the Films Division documentary on Pt. Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai, and the University of Washington, Seattle, recorded him for their archives, and Times Music released a 3-CD album of his live concerts for his 80th birthday. His honours include the Abasaheb Mujumdar Puraskar (2002), 'Sangeet Ratna' from Kashi Sangeet Samaj (2007) and the Govt. of Maharashtra Hindustani Vocal Puraskar (2012-13).
