Shubhada Paradkar is a Hindustani classical vocalist who has learnt under all four major gharanas: Kirana, Agra, Gwalior and Jaipur. Critics and rasiks remember her for her 'aggressive gayaki' and her proficiency in layakari. Born on 21 September 1957 in Baroda, she began training there under Pt. R. D. Potdar (Kirana gharana) and Pt. Madhusudan Joshi (Agra gharana). The violinist and vocalist the late Pt. Gajananrao Joshi then trained her in the Gwalior and Jaipur styles, giving her art a concrete direction. Pt. Babanrao Haldankar (Agra gharana) and Smt. Padmavati Shaligram Gokhale (Jaipur gharana) also trained her for a long time. She holds an M.A. in music from S.N.D.T. University, Mumbai. A regular performer on radio (Mumbai) and television, she has performed across India and abroad, including at the Sawai Gandharva Sammelan (Pune and Kundgol), the Doverlane Conference (Kolkata) and the Taansen Samaroh (Gwalior), and in Bangkok, Manchester and London. Her concerts feature lively interaction with rhythm; she also sings semi-classical forms such as thumri and bhajan, and is an accomplished tappa singer. She guides senior students at S.N.D.T. University, Mumbai, and Lalit Kala Kendra, Pune University, through workshops and lecture demonstrations, and has guided students in Bangkok and performed elsewhere in Thailand.
