Sumeet Anand Pandey is a Dhrupad vocalist of the Darbhanga tradition, born into a lineage of Dhrupad vocalists. He describes himself as a progressive traditionalist, and grew up in a musically rich atmosphere. His childhood training came from his grandfather Shri Birendra Mohan Pandey, son and disciple of Bihar Ratna Pt. Ram Prasad Pandey, with occasional guidance from his maternal grandfather Pt. Siyaram Tiwari. After university studies in science and management, he came under the tutelage of Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick, grandnephew and disciple of Pt. Ram Chatur Mallick, who shaped him into a professional Dhrupadiya. He presents Dhrupad of the Darbhanga tradition in its traditional form, with equal emphasis on melodic expanse (alap) and composition (pada), and enjoys the upaj-based rhythmic improvisation, or layakari, closely associated with the tradition. Sumeet broadcasts from All India Radio (AIR), New Delhi, and regularly presents Dhrupad recitals at music festivals across India.
