Varada Godbole is a Hindustani classical vocalist, born on 19 September 1975, who began learning music at the age of five. She also sings light classical genres such as natyasangeet, abhang, thumri and ghazal, and was a playback singer in the film Balgandharva. After learning the basics for seven years from Smt. Lilatai Shelar, she trained in traditional Khayal gayaki under Suramani Pt. Achyut Keshav Abhyankar of the Kirana Gharana. Within a year she won the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training scholarship from the Government of India for Hindustani classical music. After 12 years of Kirana Gharana training, she studied the intricacies and presentation of classical music for two years with Pt. Ajay Pohankar and Dr. Sushilatai Pohankar, and also trained in the basics of the Agra and Gwalior gharanas under Pt. Yashwant Mahale. She completed the Sangeet Alankar of Gandharva Mahavidyalay with first class, topped the Arts faculty with a gold medal in Sanskrit in her B.A. from the University of Mumbai, and topped her M.A. (Music) at the same university. She also holds the Sangeetacharya (PhD equivalent) degree from Gandharva Mahavidyalay. She has performed at music festivals across the country and is a regular artiste of All India Radio (AIR).
